The Aya Center is a Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF)-accredited, community-based mental health agency founded on the belief that children and adults facing emotional and behavioral challenges deserve the opportunity to achieve optimal health and live at their highest level of functioning. Recognizing the need for comprehensive mental health care and youth development services in Durham, N.C., The Aya Center was established in 2003 to provide the essential therapeutic support and community resources needed for individuals to thrive.
The Fern, or Aya, is a resilient plant that thrives in challenging environments. An individual who wears this symbol suggests that he/she has endured many adversities and outlasted much difficulty (Willis, The Adinkra Dictionary).
At The Aya Center, our mission is to awaken the Aya within each of our consumers by empowering those experiencing developmental disabilities, emotional, and behavioral challenges through community support services and outpatient treatment.
Since our founding, The Aya Center has used its proven experience and community-based approach to assist numerous public and private institutions. We provide vital mental health services, including disability determination, psychological testing, short-term individual and couples therapy, crisis management, and case management.
Over the years, we have supported more than 1,200 individuals and 250 families across North Carolina, helping them achieve personal goals and laying the foundation for lifelong positive growth, development, and learning. By working closely with parents, guardians, schools, community organizations, and a diverse network of specialists, we ensure that every client receives a personalized, holistic experience. Our tailored approach to adult mental health and youth development allows us to offer compassionate, individualized care.
CARF accreditation signals a service provider's commitment to continually improving services, encouraging feedback, and serving the community.
